After telling herself that she would not fall for Michael again, Isabel took a deep breath and came down the stairs. Seeing Michael and Maria talking softly, Isabel forced herself to smile and head towards them.
"Hi Maria. Finally here I see." Isabel said. She could feel Michael's eyes on her but she refused to meet his gaze.
Maria smiled wryly. "I had car trouble." she said and looked at the table setting for dinner. "Am I interrupting something?"
Michael was about to speak when Isabel cut in. "Not really. Just dinner. But I have to take a rain check on that because I have a date. Since you are here, Maria, you can keep Michael company."
"Excuse me? You have a date? When did this happen?" Michael asked.
"Just now. A old friend is in town and gave me a call. Got to go." Isabel said and headed out the door. "Don't wait up."
Isabel closed the door behind her and leaned against it. "Looks like I have to find something to do for a few hours." she muttered to herself and then went towards her car.
Michael and Maria the door close, with an incredulous expression on their
faces. Maria turned to look at
Michael and started to hit him on his arm. "You haven't told her, have
you!?"
"Ow! Hey, stop it."
"Come on, Michael. It's been two years since I found out! When the hell are you going to tell her?" Maria asked as she sat down on one of the chairs.
"It's not that easy. We never spoken in years. I can't just face her and say, 'Hey Izzy. Guess what! I've been in love with you all my life and my marriage fell apart because of that fact. Pass the salt.' That's not how it works." Michael replied. "Besides, she doesn't feel anything for me."
Maria sighed and shook her head. There was a moment of silence. "You know, at first, I was furious and disappointed when I found out. But now, all I care about is your happiness Michael. We were too young to know what we wanted then, but this time, don't make the same mistake again. Ok?"
Michael took Maria's hand in his and squeezed. Maria smiled. "I think it's time to call in the professionals."
"You?" Michael asked with a smile.
"Me." Maria replied, grinning.
